A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO BETHLEHEM

Mary and Joseph have set off on their famous trip to Bethlehem, guided by a kindly, unseen narrator — the apostle Luke, who is writing the gospel story. But when Luke is called away from his desk, Mary and Joseph become lost. Seeking shelter for the night, the two stumble upon an odd settlement called “Christmas Town,” populated by an even stranger assortment of characters — elves, toymakers, reindeer and a jolly old man dressed in red. Mary and Joseph soon meet one of the elves, who explains they are all feverishly working in preparation for a big event called “Christmas,” a time of giving, love and hope. Yet as Mary and Joseph attempt to ask each character for shelter for the night, it becomes apparent that they are all so wrapped up in their duties that they don’t seem to notice the very real and obvious need, right in their midst! Rejected, Mary and Joseph leave again for the desert — but as it turns out, their visit had an effect, after all.

“A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Bethlehem” is a rousing musical pageant that’s nontraditional, funny, and a joy to perform, yet delivers a powerful and important message reinforcing the true “reason for the season.”
